First Impressions of Jamaica: My Sandals South Coast Experience

This past week, I had the absolute pleasure of being hosted by Sandals / Unique Vacations and the Jamaica Tourism Board for four unforgettable days of learning about this vibrant island, its warm people, and the incredible resorts that call it home.
It was my very first time in Jamaica — and what an experience it was! I can honestly say I can’t wait to return, and next time, I’ll be bringing my husband along to share in the magic.
The warm hospitality started the moment I stepped off the plane. A friendly representative from the Jamaica Tourism Board was waiting to greet me and seamlessly guided me through immigration and the airport. In no time, I found myself relaxing in the Sandals Lounge at Montego Bay Airport. This private lounge is a gem (included if you stay at any Sandals ) — offering comfy living room-style seating, private bathrooms, snacks, and refreshing drinks. It’s the perfect spot to relax while waiting for your transfer to the resort. Although I didn’t stay long (my transfer was already waiting), I managed to grab a drink and some banana chips before settling in for the scenic 90-minute drive to the resort.
The ride itself was bumpy as we wound our way through the mountains, but it was a wonderful way to take in the small towns and villages along the route and see how people live in Jamaica, especially outside the major cities. Ninety minutes later, I arrived at the beautiful Sandals South Coast.
This is the only resort along this stretch of Jamaica’s southern coastline, and the seclusion made the entire stay feel serene and relaxing. The property is massive — yet designed in such a way that even at 75% capacity, it felt calm and uncrowded.
Upon arrival, I was greeted with a warm smile, a cool towel, and then escorted to the Club Lounge, an unexpected but welcome surprise. There, I was treated to a tropical welcome drink before receiving my room key.
My room was stunning. Every suite at Sandals South Coast faces the ocean, and mine came with a private soaking tub on the balcony complete with curtains for added privacy — a thoughtful touch I haven’t seen at other resorts. Inside, the room featured a plush king-size bed, a fully stocked mini fridge with champagne, wine, water, and soft drinks, a coffee maker with Jamaica’s famous Blue Mountain Coffee (a must-try if you haven’t already), and full bottles of liquor for mixing your own cocktails.

Though my schedule was packed with site visits, conferences, and even a day trip to YS Falls, I still managed to enjoy some downtime at the resort. The beach was breathtaking — calm, endless, and never crowded. No matter the time of day, there were always plenty of loungers and palapas waiting.
I sampled many of the resort’s drinks, but the best came from Latitudes Bar, which sits above the water and is hands-down the best spot to catch the sunset. And let me tell you — the sunsets here are unreal.
Having read about the must-try cocktails at Sandals, I made sure to taste everything from the fruity Island Smile to the colorful Bob Marley. They did not disappoint, and I’m already planning to recreate them at home.

The food at the resort was equally impressive, with my favorite being the Taco Food Truck by the beach. There’s just something about fresh tacos and a tropical drink on a hot afternoon that hits differently when your toes are in the sand.

One of the biggest surprises? Scuba diving is included — up to three dives a day (except the day before you fly). For divers, this is a huge perk, considering how expensive dive trips can be in the Caribbean. Snorkeling and other water sports are also part of the package, which adds so much value to a Sandals stay.
Before traveling, I’d often heard warnings that Jamaica could be unsafe, especially for women traveling solo. However, I never once felt harassed or uncomfortable. On the contrary, I felt secure the entire time — something I attribute both to the warmth of the people and the resort’s high standards for staff and guest safety. For women looking to take a solo trip for relaxation and luxury, I would highly recommend Sandals South Coast.
As I look back, I can’t wait to return — not only to explore more of the Sandals properties but also to experience more of Jamaica itself. Next time, I’m determined to hike the Blue Mountains, visit a coffee plantation, and of course, enjoy more of those delicious Jamaican patties. Jamaica has left a lasting impression on me, and I know without a doubt — I’ll be back.
