While visiting the Riviera Maya in 2023, we were looking for a different kind of tour — one that would connect us more deeply with the Mayan people and give us an opportunity to give back to the local community. The Buggy Jungle Tour with Buggy Tour Playa turned out to be the perfect choice, combining cultural immersion, meaningful interactions, and unforgettable natural beauty.
Our day began with a pickup at our resort, followed by a short drive to the buggy station. After a quick safety briefing, we hopped into our open-air buggy, ready to tackle the dusty jungle trails. The ride was thrilling — bouncing along dirt paths, splashing through muddy puddles, and passing through lush greenery that seemed to stretch endlessly in every direction.
A Glimpse into Mayan Village Life
The first major stop on our tour was a small, remote Mayan village. It was a shock to see how these families lived — with no running water or electricity — yet they all seemed genuinely content and welcoming.

We were greeted warmly by our hosts, who invited us into their humble home. There, they served us homemade tortillas with chicken, cooked over an stone charcoal grill. The flavors were simple yet delicious, and the hospitality was unmatched.
After lunch, our guide gave us a tour of the village, explaining the customs and way of life. He also led us to a small store and explained that, if we wanted to help the families, the best way was not to give cash but to purchase a bag of groceries for them. For just $5 USD, we could fill a large bag with rice, beans, tortillas, and other daily staples — enough to feed a family for nearly a week. We decided to buy four bags and personally delivered them to some of the
families back in the village. It was such a rewarding experience, and it felt good to give back in a way that directly supported their needs.

The Sacred Cenote Experience
From the village, we continued deeper into the jungle until we reached a secluded cenote. Before entering the water, our guides — both of Mayan heritage — invited us to join in a ritual prayer, asking the Mayan gods for permission to swim in the sacred waters. Cenotes are considered spiritual and vital to Mayan culture and participating in this tradition made the experience even more meaningful.
The cenote itself was breathtaking — crystal-clear water so pure you could see straight to the bottom. Because of its remote location, it felt truly untouched and secluded. Swimming there was both refreshing and surreal, the cool water offering a perfect contrast to the jungle heat. Once we finished, we gathered again for another short prayer, this time to give thanks — blessing the earth, the waters, and one another.

Final Thoughts
The Buggy Jungle Tour was far more than an adventure — it was a window into the heart of the Mayan world. From the adrenaline of the buggy ride to the warmth of the village and the tranquility of the cenote, every moment felt genuine and unforgettable. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical tourist excursions in the Riviera Maya, this is a tour that will leave you with not just memories, but a deeper appreciation for the culture, people, and land.
